DoCoMo suffers minor setback for 3G trial service
By Reuters staff

25 May 2001

NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan's top mobile operator, said on Friday it would not be able to distribute the showcase videoconferencing handset for its upcoming third-generation (3G) trial service for up to one month. The setback underscores the technical challenge that 3G services pose for wireless carriers hoping to offer faster Internet connections and enhanced communication features.

A planned allotment of 1,200 handsets, built by Matsushita Communication Industries Co Ltd , with tiny video cameras will be distributed to trial users "by the end of June at the latest", well past the May 30 launch date for introductory services.

DoCoMo scaled back plans for a full commercial launch of 3G a month ago to an "introductory service" that will operate from May 30 to October 1, whereby trial users will be exempt from paying for the handsets or the basic subscription charge.

The latest setback was attributed to the need to "make further re-adjustments to the handset software (applications)," DoCoMo said in a statement.

Some 4,500 monitors will be chosen for the trial service, up from an originally planned 4,000, with 1,400 standard models and 1,900 data-card models for laptop personal computers to be offered in addition to the videoconferencing phone.

Of the total, 2,000 individual users and 2,500 corporate users will a model.

DoCoMo received more than 147,000 applications for the trial service, the same number of subscribers that it expects to sign up by March 2002.

DoCoMo also said it would take steps to prevent unsolicited e-mail from being sent to the current 23.68 million users of its "i-mode" Internet-enabled phones.

Subscribers, who are each initially assigned an e-mail address based on their phone number upon purchase of an i-mode handset, need to change their e-mail address to stop receiving messages that contain advertisements.

DoCoMo said it would step up marketing efforts to encourage current users to change their addresses, and will also implement steps to make it mandatory for users to select a unique address.

Since users have to pay transmission charges for e-mail that they receive, DoCoMo said it would also consider changing its billing structure.

DoCoMo shares rallied 46.7 percent to a peak of 2.89 million yen this year, but have given up their gains over the last three weeks. They closed at 2.42 million yen on Friday.

NTT Docomo to Begin Trial 3G Cell Phone Service Wed.
Kyodo News

28 May 2001

NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Monday it will conduct a trial of third-generation (3G) mobile phone services in the Tokyo metropolitan area from Wednesday through Sept. 30.

The world's first 3G mobile phone service to collect phone charges will involve the free distribution of 4,500 handsets to participants in the trial to be held in Tokyo's 23 wards and limited areas in Yokohama and Kawasaki, both Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan's largest mobile phone operator said.

The new cell phone system, called FOMA for "freedom of mobile multimedia access," will provide voice, video phone and other services including data transmission up to 40 times faster than NTT DoCoMo's popular i-mode Internet-capable service.

NTT DoCoMo initially planned to distribute 4,000 3G mobile phones but increased the number to 4,500 after 147,000 people applied to participate in the trial as monitors.

Participants will be exempted from basic monthly fees but not actual communications charges. In return, they will be asked to fill out questionnaires about the 3G services.
