The telecom equipment companies like Lucent, Nortel, Alcatel have balance sheet issues. In this environment, it puts them at a big disadvantage.

That is why I would prefer a Cisco over them. Makes it easier to move in traditional Lucent territory.
Undecided about Nortel but there is no rush to buy it given the overcapacity in broadband.

Lucent getting booted out of the S and P 500 upon a buy by ALA is also an issue. Lots of supply of shares. They may try to structure to deal to keep LU a US company in the deal (rumors that mentioned this morning on cnbc--don't how that would be done)....that would mean a bounce in the stock as it means the company does not have to deal with US security issue (bell labs) or the index issue.

However, not willing to take a chance on this (long or short).
