But stating opinion as fact, outright lying, exaggeration, and fear-mongering to manipulate a stock downward is, in my opinion, pretty sleazy.

That goes for both directions.
When a stock pops like GENE did, on the basis of a Blodgett type call, it can be sensible to take a few profits. Stuff rarely goes up in a straight line, however good the story.
