"If we have a claim on others, it can only be in terms of mutual respect, in recognition of their claim on us."

Yes, I remember this discussion. It kind of got bogged down over whether or not we can have any claim on others.

If you are going to mix moral rights and wrongs into the paragraph you have to consider another variable. Some of us feel a regulation of our behaviour that goes beyond where worldly self interest lies, or where the interests of others lies. If something is right and just then some of us would die for it essentially acting against the self interest and possibly the interests of others. Being burned at the stake or tortured rather than agree to a falsehood would be an example. In this example maybe the others who are burning you, believe you to be a liar or despot and have found you guilty in a court. You could save yourself by confessing to a falsehood and expressing remorse but you don't. In this example we are basically agreeing to a violent death to the self and one that does not benefit others. This example would violate Karens number 1 wrong.

Some times the "morally right thing" stands superior to all other consideration. This would probably separate a choice as being based in "religious fundamentalism" or in the "interests of self or others." In my own philosophy I consider my physical self as I consider others except that I have more responsibility for care and upkeep for self. In the long run (eternity), however, the things I would do, or not do, regarding self or others bears the same consequence.
