Eric- re: 5105

The links in your referenced January '01 post are no longer available on the Qualcomm site but... One significant piece of the puzzle involves the claim by Qualcomm that the 5105 was the first R-UIM compatible 1x chip, specifically targeting the Korean and Chinese markets for a low cost GSM/CDMA roaming solution. The CDG still has this release:

SAN DIEGO--Jan. 24, 2001--QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the rollout of the world's first integrated third-generation (3G) cdma2000 1x Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) handset solution. Samples of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM5105(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) integrated circuit and system software shipped in December 2000 and offer direct interface with the new 3G CDMA-compliant Schlumberger Simera Airflex(TM) smart cards, announced in June 2000. The demand for R-UIM smart card capabilities and services has been driven by Korean and Chinese network operators to allow their subscribers to roam across CDMA and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks. These roaming capabilities can lead to new mobile commerce smart card services....

Unicom delays may come into play here, and delays of a few months for the 5100, but why impute "mysterious" "insertion" or "substitution" of the 5105 for the 5100? In the context of the Chinese market the 5105 seems constructive and useful enough for the Korean makers.

(Not to mention mightylakers is the only one on any thread tonight to correctly spell "misled")
