Applied Materials to buy Israeli company Oramir
SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 30 (Reuters) - Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news), the largest maker of equipment used to make microchips, said on Wednesday it would acquire the Israeli company Oramir Semiconductor Equipment in order to expand its range of tools that prevent defects on semiconductor wafers.

The deal, which involves an undisclosed amount of cash, requires approval by the Israeli government, Applied Materials said.

Oramir specializes in laser cleaning technologies for chip wafers. Applied Materials said it plans to integrate the company into its process diagnostics and control business group.

Shares of Applied Materials closed at $51.85 on Tuesday on Nasdaq, off a 52-week high of $98.50.
