Intel warns of chip shortages theinquirer.net

Elsewhere at the Inquirer, Mike weighs in with this puzzling bit of news.

A REPORT IN THE TAIWANESE press said that the manager in
charge of Intel Taiwan has warned of a shortage of semiconductors
which could hit as early as September this year.

HY Wu was speaking to the Taiwan-based Economic News, which
cites him as saying the reason for the shortfall is increased
demand for computers from Red China.

Really. Conventional wisdom would have Intel awash in capacity Real Soon Now, with the famous 7.5gigabuck capex budget this year and those .13um 12 inch wafers being cranked out a million a week, or something like that. The P4 is a pig die-wise, but the idea that the Chinese would jump on the bus to hell is amusing too. They may be many things, but they aren't dumb, and they are extremely price conscious.

PS. Link to the Cheaper AMD SMP article: theinquirer.net It's always good to cite Mike's e-rag, but he needs the hits too.

Jim, Athlon dual computing from VIA? That's neither positive or negative. That's laughable. <g>
