From Dow Jones:

SAN DIEGO (Dow Jones)Gateway Inc. (GTW) unveiled the Gateway Guarantee program under which it will beat competitors' prices for a limited time.

The computer maker also reiterated its earnings outlook for 2001 and said it expects the Gateway Guarantee to drive incremental volume growth, with overall gross margin dollars expected to remain the same or greater, while overall gross margin percentage may decline.

In a press release Wednesday, the company said the Gateway Guarantee requires that consumers present a current ad from Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), HewlettPackard Co. (HWP), Dell Computer Corp. (DELL), International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), Sony Corp. (SNE) or Toshiba Corp. (J.TOS) for a new PC or server with minimum specifications at least equal to its own.

If Gateway sells a comparable system and if the competitor's price is lower, then Gateway will beat that price.

The computer maker said the initiative will not change its previous guidance issued on April 19 when it said it expected about breakeven results from continuing operations in the first half of the year, excluding charges.

For the second half of 2001, Gateway expects income from continuing operations to return to profitability,

Gateway expects first half unit sales down slightly from 2000, but second half unit sales are expected to increase from last year.
