Secularly, man is a social animal, dependent upon speech. It must be presumed that what he says is honest in all but exceptional instances, or it vitiates the effectiveness of speech and the fundamental bond of trust without which there is no society. There is an accommodation generally made for "white lies", narrow and readily understood exceptions which do not disturb the underlying principle. We may lie, in some instances, to spare someone's feelings, or to protect our privacy (when silence is not enough), or to thwart a greater evil. Even then, it is important that exceptions be narrowly construed, so that the bar to lying will remain high.....
