We keep learning lessons; I don't think we ever "graduate" and some days we flunk miserably. (I too went long today with some SPX calls-- now just hoping for a bounce to minimize the damage tomorrow). Every time we think we figure out a set of rules to trade by, they change the situation so that our wonderful rules leave us hanging and naked. Sometimes the more we learn, the worse it gets. I often remind myself of Velo's April post when he so honestly wrote that he had lost his large profit from a month before. I find that very consoling. As you say, it happens hard and it happens fast and everyone takes a beating at one time or another. If even Velo (who is my analyst idol) can get taken to the woodshed, then who are we to be surprised that it happens to us? It's funny-- I've been a stay-at-home mom for 18 years and for me SI has become a sort of workplace. When I worked, I was a probation officer and social worker, and this reminds me of the days one of our kids went bad; we'd go out and get a beer and talk about the signals missed or the call we didn't listen closely enough to--- but mostly we just had a beer and knew we weren't alone- everyone has had a kid go wrong or a buy go south or a deal go sour or a soufflé fall. BUt tomorrow, we find ourselves checking the futures, reading the threads, looking at the charts-- because we also love the adrenaline and the challenge and the thrill of that good call (or put). This post is starting to sound like George Clooney in "The Perfect Storm"-- "What could be better than being a swordfish boat captain?" I think it's time for the glass of wine.
