Well, putting off poor old mom is pretty easy but I see your point. Its a judgement call whether or not their level of need to know qualifies. The reasons you gave (worry and interference) if valid are good enough. There are always things to share without divulging "The Thing" or agreeing to talk about it. So I can talk about the movie we watched, a dinner, or what we did with the kids...the usual stuff without divulging "The Thing" or agreeing to talk about it right now. My sister complains that mom prys and drives her nuts. It doesn't happen to me and my sister credits that to my personality. People who know me know that if I don't want to do something there is no point in pushing it.
