Re: Maybe those features have something to do with it...

The 12 bay case with hot swap PS adds $200 to $400, and the dual processor 2 channel SCSI motherboard adds $500. What about the other $3,000 of the difference?

What if a dual capable 1.2GHZ Athlon 4 in a 12 bay case with hot-swap power supply and dual channel SCSI is being offered for $2,500?

I have no illusions about AMD selling nearly as many dual processor A4 systems in its production launch as Intel sells Itaniums in its "pilot" launch. But don't you have any illusions about what kind of pricing Intel is going to be offering OEMs on the Coppermine and Foster core Xeons to make sure it turns out that way.

When the Intel representatives visit Compaq to set up next quarter's orders, you can bet that they'll be shown A4 pricing and presented with the plea, "save us from being forced to order these parts from this terrible company. Times are so hard and the economy is so, so tough right now - save us from temptation!" And Intel is going to respond with some very sharp pricing.

And if Intel still insists on much more than about $500 from Compaq for a large cache, top speed grade CPU, then you will see tier 1 Athlon SMP servers.
