It looks like our bipolar thread has crashed again.

You might note that "IBM has no plans to use Athlon in servers, according to a company representative. Neither does Compaq," doesn't necessarily rule out either company using them in *workstations*.

[Edit: although these followup quotes seem negative, and seem to be abou workstations, if the author hasn't taken them out of context:

"On the desktop, there's not a huge amount of difference between the vendors," Knox said. "We think we can offer a very different solution than what's being sold" to businesses now.

"We're going to have some wins there," Knox vowed. "It might not be a Compaq or an IBM. We're working towards that, though."

end Edit]

Even if they aren't on board right now, I fail to understand the sudden 'stock is dead in the water' comments, and the like.

You'd think we hadn't increased market share 4% last quarter, *without* the new mobile offerings or the upcoming MP launch. And there's the crush launch, faster Tbirds, and palomino for the desktop, not to mention the new SiS chipset, etc., etc.

Lithium for the lot of you. :)

Doug

Jim,

AMD should "literally" give the main server makers Palominos at a little over cost. Whatever it takes.

From this page: techstore.com
it appears that AMD is selling them cheaply:

1.0 GHz $201.52
1.2 GHz $222.84
1.4 GHz $278.30

I wouldn't be surprised though if AMD was initially asked much higher prices, which contributed to not gaining any design wins, which in turn force AMD to sell these chips only a little over desktop prices.

I wouldn't be surprised either if PowerNow is disabled, in order to maximize the profit from the 0% laptop market penetration.

AMD is playing games that are as pathetic as Intel's, but with AMD, OEM can afford to just laugh and say: thanks but no thanks.

Joe

You'd scream bloody murder if Intel tried this.

Jim, Re: AMD should "literally" give the main server makers Palominos at a little over cost. Whatever it takes.

I absolutely agree. "Short time pain for long term gain" -- wasn't that one of Jerry's catch phrases? That appears also the strategy Intel follows right now with their price cuts. They know that if they lose business to AMD, they will lose it for a long time.
