I employ a lot of J6P's, and I can tell you flat out that check will be cashed and spent within 1-week by most of them.

The family people that work here will most likely use it as "found" money and use it towards an unanticipated expense or a purchase they've been putting off.

I know of one family that wants to go and help build an orphanage in Chile, but also needs money for a music lessons for a talented child. This money will pay for the music lessons.

Yes, some will use it to pay down credit cards, and then they may max them right back. That's the American way I guess.

I sell to retailers, so I have a bit of a handle on how spending works at the consumer end. We rarely run sales in September, since Back to School credit card bills are being paid off then. We plan sales around Rapid Refund times, and Dollar Days when the credit card bills come after Christmas.

We also have a couple of large corporations in our town that pay quarterly profit sharing to their employees accounting for 25% of their total pay, and this is blue collar workers. Stores here have special private sales for these people (I crashed one at an appliance store once 15-years ago and got killer deals) and car dealers court them by and blanket ads.

This money will get blown, for the most part. It is "found" money, and it will be treated like it was won in the lottery by most, IMO.
