Of course we struggle. Because things are not clear. If you can't know motives than you can't be sure of gossip because you can't be sure of idleness or deliberate destructiveness. There would be some clear cases, but mostly you get gray. You perceive I am needling you because you don't like what I am saying. You said you had a lecture on exactly the topic- makes it sound cookie cutter. I didn't say that, you did. You obviously believe you can do that with things as ambiguous as "gossip", I don't. You also said something like ego trip- I could go look it up, but I'm not all that interested. It's hardly name calling to say what you said about yourself. Unless you were gossiping about yourself and I should have perceived your "badness." Were you gossiping about yourself? Were your motives impure?
