We are free to buy or not buy the services of the oil
company as we see fit. There is no gouging. On the other hand, we have no choice (not involving a stent in jail)when it comes to federal income taxes.

Yes, George, you have finally asked what should have been the obvious questions from the beginning of this "gouging" discussion. "Who is to decide what reasonable prices should be?" "When does a nice profit become "gouging"?". Sounds like somebody is advocating price controls. I seem to recall a country that used to be big on that ... oh, yeah, the USSR.
