NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Peabody Energy steamed up the market for
initial public offerings with a 31 percent gain in its debut on the New
York Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

Peabody Energy

CEO Irl Engelhardt said the company has been eyeing an IPO for years, but its
debut just as the nation's energy needs are in the spotlight was a "combination
of good planning and good luck." Watch a video of the interview with
Engelhardt.

Engelhardt said new coal-burning electric plants are being planned throughout
the country and existing facilities hope to boost their output to an average of 85
percent of capacity from 70 percent now.

Signs of a strong open came late Monday as Peabody priced a big $4 above its
already boosted price range.

The St. Louis-based firm is the largest privately held
coal company in the world.
