Andy - if Intel "gets it right" with McKinley, the progression after that should be much more like the X86 progression, with each new processor generation adding features and capability while executing previous generation code faster than its predecessor. The shift from Merced to McKinley will improve performance but not as a "drop-in". The system level changes - memory interface, I/O interface, interprocessor communication - are very significant and will require pretty much new designs.
