$400 billion is poetic license, no?

Otherwise I have to cut and paste all kinds of statistics, and if it's just poetic license, why bother?

For Japan, the balance of trade a little more than $4 billion. Overall, around $31 billion. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing isn't such a simple question - maybe it's one of those orthogonal thingies, whatever that is. A billion dollars doesn't seem like a lot of money to me, but $31 billion is a lot more than it used to be, and it does seem to be creeping up rather fast.

On the other hand, we don't like having smokestack industries in our neighborhoods - how much further out of our neighborhood could we get than into another country? As long as we can keep paying for the stuff we buy, do we have a problem? Maybe our big export these days is the dollar?
