$400 billion is poetic license, no? Otherwise I have to cut and paste all kinds of statistics, and if it's just poetic license, why bother? For Japan, the balance of trade a little more than $4 billion. Overall, around $31 billion. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing isn't such a simple question - maybe it's one of those orthogonal thingies, whatever that is. A billion dollars doesn't seem like a lot of money to me, but $31 billion is a lot more than it used to be, and it does seem to be creeping up rather fast. stls.frb.org On the other hand, we don't like having smokestack industries in our neighborhoods - how much further out of our neighborhood could we get than into another country? As long as we can keep paying for the stuff we buy, do we have a problem? Maybe our big export these days is the dollar?
