"I've heard rumors that Compaq will introduce a new iPAQ for the holiday season which features a 400 MHz X-Scale CPU from Intel which only consumes one third of the power of the current 203 MHz model."

Don't believe it. From what Intel was saying a month or two ago, Covalis (the chip in question) won't tape out until then. So that iPaq is probably 12 months from now. ARMs are currently the best 32 bit embedded processor designs, and ARM does a good job of pushing things along. I am not so certain about WinCE, however. In it's current incarnation it is pretty good, albeit with some odd aspects, but it is just too late. The Linux's for handhelds ae shaping up really well and have a bright future. Check out handhelds.org sometime...

You know where the StrongARM design came from, don't you, Andreas? I don't know if Dirk was involved with it, but let's just say it wasn't an in-house design. I forget what Intel renamed it now.

Edit: Ok, StrongARM is XScale now. AMD isn't the only company with a naming problem, I'd say.
