I read a piece in the Barron's "Market Watch" column that immediately struck me. Alan B. Lancz discussed the California energy crisis and how it has resulted in a flood of buy recommendations for Dynegy (DYN:NYSE), Duke Power (DUK:NYSE) and Calpine (CPN:NYSE). We were reminded that Calpine has already risen from a price of 3 just two years ago to a recent high of 60, which certainly discounts a mountain of good news. Further, Lancz had the temerity to suggest that California will fix the problem and be a net exporter of electricity in two years, and Calpine could drop sharply. Now that's a beautiful piece of contrary thinking, a real classic. I bet this is exactly what will happen. I am short the calls.
