>>>only in politics, can you screw up and blame everyone else for your greed, corruption, and stupidity as the Dems are doing on this energy situation?...So many parts of their deregulation program made little common sense.<<<

Les--

You better check your dates (and under which administrations) as to when some of the key pieces of legislation went into place on the national and state levels before you start pointing fingers. You might discover that "they" aren't who you think they are.

IIRC George Bush was the Republican President during the period 1989-1993 when the key 1992 Open Access legislation when into place

and

Pete Wilson was the Republican Governor of CA during the period 1991-1999 when the electricity deregulation plan was being written and first implemented.

Ooops...

Uh, Les, perhaps you're forgetting that the whole idea was the brainchild of big industry, Pete Wilson genius Republican (who still bellows about how it was a good move - are we allowed to hold him personally financially accountable for this ?), and eventually the generators. Sure there was stupidity on both sides, but when the only viable short term solution is political, yet the California legislature's options are limited because FERC seems to have all the authority to regulate but won't do it -- you get a huge mess. Yeah, rates need to go up some, but not on an unlimited spot market manipulation basis. I don't know why the CA PUC can't regain price capping authority, but it seems not to be an option with FERC given that power.

Don and CB - sorry I'm quite short of time right now - but here's a general link that might get you somewhere if you want to join me in the glazed over eyes society --
