Richard: OT. Yup. You'll get no argument from me with regard to this. But it only works so long as their general populace remains "under the thumb" of the current regime. That governing system, by its attempt to create the simblance of a free market system while simultaneously trying to graft on a Communistic hierarchy, has opened a Pandora's box, imho. As their growing middle class, aided and abetted by their one child rule, seek more freedom and power in pursuits of individual interest....well....me thinks the Communists having a tiger by the tail is an apt metaphor.

All Democratic countries need to do is exercise patience. Time is inevitably on our side. However, even so one's got to recognize that whatever Democratic processes the Chinese eventually align themselves with still, it'll be a decidely Occidental one. To get an idea of what this could mean one need only look at Chinas long history and its tendency to want to stay with the very process it long ago invented.

Bureaucracy.

And given what I see with our IRS tax forms I'd say they'll be real comfortable with THAT aspect of Democracy. Heh! *Ahem*
