As logical as that post is, there is little in it to identify a God or the God that is the object of worship by Western religions. You apparently don't like what we worship so you make something up and attribute it to us and then mock it.

The last paragraph seems sincere and worthy of comment.

"It is time for the church to get rid of the idea that any God worth His salt must hate all of humankind."

I find nothing in religious doctrine to support the idea that God hates mankind. God is the creator and sustainer. I don't believe that God "Hates" mankind or that you are justified in making the assertion that believers worship a God who Hates mankind.

If you plant a garden and weeds and pests over come your crops or the garden becomes briney, wouldn't you do some major cleanup and try to restart from scratch. If you are organic you'd probably save some of the better seeds to start the new garden with. That would not equal you hating the fruits and vegetables of your garden.

"The concepts of unearned sin,.." I don't believe in this.

"and eternal torture are unworthy" Why? "They are illogical" No, the logic is well established. " and inhuman." You are correct. However, it is just and fair to the humans who've earned it. "And there really oughta be a law..." There is. It is a common sense list of shalts and shalt nots, and is quite logical/moral.

"so there is no need for all the tribes of earth to flatter their imagination with their very own specialized god. Every one is a part and parcel of the substance of God.

Anthropologists have seen many modern examples of the God process at work in isolated primitive cultures. I'll assume you mean cultural anthropologists and simply respond that social and cultural anthropologists are usually trying to find some evidence to back up their preconceived hunches, from Frazer to Malinowski.

God is not some depraved nut with a beard hiding in the sky or up in the mountains. How do you know where God is? I note that you admit he "is"...

The only God possible, IMO, is the one that Spinoza and Einstein were able to conceive of. They were mortal men. I note your IMO which is refreshing because it shows in your heart, soul and mind you don't know.

The idea of a PERSONAL God is an idea that ants have indulged in ever since they realized how wonderful they were. You have studied ant society? You know their mind so well you purport to know the mind of God?

For modern, scientific people to still be worshipping a Tribal God conceived by primitives Modern man worships an image of his own creation called science. Read Genesis again, it talks about a tree you might find interesting.

It is time for the church... The concepts of unearned sin, and eternal torture are unworthy to a civilized human race. What Church? "...unearned sin" if you mean original sin I agree with you. Do you think Moses wanted to go up the mountain? No one wants to go up the mountain. It's only your imagination that makes you think God is or should be Mr. Nice Guy. "...civilized" Where?

They are illogical and inhuman. And your point is?

Salon, you over estimate God and science.
