For the most part, I completely agree with you. However, broadband last mile to the masses makes a whole bunch of business applications viable that just couldn't be considered before.

As one rather trivial example, or perhaps not so trivial, consider a typical call center and how its load varies throughout the day, as well as from day to day - sometimes unpredictably. Imagine the flexibility given the call center manager who could call "Mary" and have her sign into the system and start taking calls.

Many benefits:

Mary doesn't have to travel, leave her home, hire baby sitters, etc.
Business saves on employee costs, real estate costs while providing better customer service.

To the extent that there's a business case to deliver broadband to the masses, it will happen at a price they're willing to pay.
