Hitachi Data Systems this week unveiled a new professional-services program for its storage hardware and software customers.

The Data Protection Services portfolio is aimed at customers that deploy large-scale data movement and data replication facilities, Hitachi officials say. Consulting and implementation services to set up remote copy and point-in-time copy functions using Hitachi software are included.

For the time being, the services are being implemented only by Hitachi, says a company spokesperson. However, those services will be available to solution providers that want to resell them to their clients, the spokesperson says.

Such services may or not be needed, depending on how large and intricate the client's infrastructure is, says Keith Trotte, account representative at Sales Strategies, a Metuchen, N.J.-based solution provider.

"They are especially useful when migrating from mainframe legacy applications to open systems," says Trotte. "Since Hitachi offers both mainframe and open systems connectivity, the services serve as a bridge."
