Yeah, before Munich, he was famous for putting Germans back to work. Six years of "unprecedented" prosperity, ending the "dismal economic performance" of the preceding administration. Lot's of "look how bad things were before he got here?". Sound familiar?

No doubt they even sponsored subsidies for dairy farmers in key strategic regions regions. (At least until they could consolidate enough power to simply cart potential opponents off to prisons.)

Most Germans, being uninterested in politics and convinced that "everybody does it" when discussing corruption, simply let Hitler do whatever he wanted. His popularity made him sort of a "rock star despot", not unlike our recent "rock star president".

The chill of history blows down from the mountains and extinguishes our hearths before we can revive our diligence...
