This is where I agree with you Gustave (amazing that!!)... Killing Arafat would leave a terrific power vacuum in Palestinian leadership. The Israelis have little confidence that whoever filled Arafat's shoes wouldn't be more violent than he has been. And the person that did take his place would be forced to take the required steps that would gain him the respect of the Palestinians (terrorist/military action)... Arafat has nothing to prove to them given his past as the leader of the PLO and his connections to Palestinian backers/supporters. Now Yaacov is playing like the "cat who caught the canary" and wants to play games with his "ask the right question", and that's fine with me. And he's right that Arafat could have been assasinated at any particular time of Israel's choosing. But then again, so could many of their other enemies... (the US could do the same, for that matter)... But it's a matter of national will, and to what extent they willing to create "plausible deniability" or resorting to outright assassination with no regard for denying their actions publicly (as has occurred recently on the West Bank againt PA military leadership). Anyway, most of the time, heads of state get murdered by their own intelligence thugs (JFK, Yitzhak Rabin, Aldo Moro, etc.) Fully agreed. Re-read my post. Arafat is being protected by Israel against his Arab brothers! He knows that.
