more brilliant ATT decisions.

May be they will do PCS and VZ a favor and raise their wireless rates too.

Interesting article from today's SF Chronicle Business Section (page B3). (Cannot access article on SFC site to post it.)

Title: New fast wireless in turmoil.
Subtitle: Firms trying to fix snags for U.S. rollout

Snips follow (. = skipped paragraphs):
.
Cingular Wireless, which had been planning to roll out the first new services in June, has now postponed its U.S, introduction until late summer. ...phonemakers and wireless carriers, which normally love to show off their latest handsets well in advance, have paraded precious few in public. [Ed. must be referring to GPRS phones <g>]
.
.
.
.
The pressure to rollout these [high-speed wireless] services as soon as possible is obvious: get subscribers to use more and more wireless minutes to offset the huge investment cellular companies have made to expand and upgrade their networks.

Perhaps that's why Cingular held out so long before scrapping plans to grab an early lead in this country with the introduction of next-generation services in California and Nevada. It wasn't until yesterday that Cingular acknowledged to the Associated press that the June launch was being delayed.

Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless have been more sketchy about their plans, but all three maintain they will launch next-generation services during the second half of 2001.
[end of article]

Does anyone know when Cingular planned to foll out in Seattle area? I thought that was one of the earlier sites. Want to start the clock ticking on when we will get word of a delay there as well.

Also, does anyone know if AWE has made any specific promises for GSM/GPRS?

Many people believe, as you stated, that "AWE is supposedly independent of AT&T." In fact, I believe that AWE still remains a tracking stock, even though AT&T is disposing of its shares in AWE. There is no real independence here, and even if there were, its corporate culture and policy making remain AT&T through and through. It's better to let these companies stumble--better for the competition, that is. My only fear is that the older, bigger companies carry a lot of influence in both financial and political circles, making it easier for them to make the wrong business decisions and still survive.
