Direct Connection
or
Serial port networking.

The Direct Cable connection is a serial port connection and does not require a network card adapter. The fact that the Dlink came back when you removed it leads me to think it is actually present, even if you can't see the connection point. This would be the case for an integrated chipset that connects using header pins. If the backplate isn't connected and the chipset is turned on it will be using resources. The fix is to go into setup (Press F1 or Del on startup) and look for a Ethernet, Network Card line in the CMOS, it would normally be found in the Integrated Peripherals area but you may have to look around. Make sure that it is disabled then reboot and remove it from your OS (use Device Manager), it should not be detected again.

Check your motherboard manual to verify the presence or absence of an onboard NIC. The Evil Empire usually doesn't detect stuff that isn't there, usually.
