I don't know what to do about it. I know what NOT to do - the reason I brought up AIDS is that I see it as not only a disease but a metaphor, "Bad people get AIDS because they do bad things." The retributionist theory of disease.

Why was I thinking of the metaphor? Because it's so similar to the metaphor I am reading on this thread about the economy, "Bad people have recessions/depressions because they do bad things." The retributionist theory of economics.

These theories have brothers and sisters - the retributionist theory of war - and so forth.

The corollary of the retributionist theory of economics is that the problems caused by ill-advised economic choices are impossible to rectify because the guilty must be punished. It's one of those immutable laws of nature, you see.

Not believing in predestination or karma, I don't get it. "Say 10 Our Fathers, 10 Hail Marys, Mea Culpa, go forth and sin no more. See you back here next week." Work together to fix what's broken and preserve what's not broken.

Anyway, that's what I think.
