"Does someone know?"

The Kaaba. This is a square building in the center of the Al Haram Mosque in Mecca. In the time of Mohammed, Mecca was a center for Carravans to come and exchange goods. There were dozens of idols stored in the Kaaba. So, when anyone came to Mecca they could drag the god of choice out and perform some worship to it. The idols were removed when Muslims took control of the city. Muslims believe that this was the original sight where Abraham was commanded to build an alter of worship to God. Muslims believe that the foundation is made of some unique and indestructable material placed by angels. The walls of the Kaaba have been destroyed by flooding and rebuilt so there are some eye witness reports about the foundation. The spring which Hagar found in the wilderness to refresh Ishmael is also near this sight. Mohammad recieved guidence from the Quran to have believers face this site during prayer as a community bond in worshipping God. So theoretically, 1 Billion people are praying a communal prayer five times a day.

Why would stone idols have been stored here? It is said that this spot has always called to all human beings to come to it and worship.

If I pretended to be a Muslim

Oh, I don't think it would be a good idea to mess with the Saudi border guards.
