Hi richard surckla; Re Winbond manufacturing RDRAM chips...

The original news that Winbond is soon going to be in production of RDRAM dates to quite some time ago, but is the only hit to a search for "RDRAM" on their website:

Jan 19, 1999
Winbond to Provide 1.6GB/sec Rambus Memory Devices
Winbond Electronics Corporation and Rambus (R) Inc. today announced that Winbond has taken a license for the Rambus R TM high-bandwith memory-interface technology. Winbond will incorporate the interface into forthcoming 144M/128M and beyond dynamic random access memories (DRAMs), with initial devices expected to sample in the third quarter of 1999 and volume production planned for the fourth quarter, year 1999.

Winbond's letter to shareholder for the 1998 year (i.e. early 1999):

... In early 1999, Fab IV accomplished the outputs of 15,000 pcs. of 0.25 micron wafers. Fab V, which is under full-steam construction, is scheduled to start up volume production in the third quarter, 1999. By then, the process technology will be totally shifted to 0.2 micron while such new products including notably 128M and RAMBUS DRAM will make their debut. ...

Nope, samples by 4Q99:

August 31, 1999
... In Taiwan, Winbond Electronics and Vanguard are have licensed Rambus technology. Winbond Electronics will have engineering samples at the end of this year. ...

But they never did sample any RDRAM, as far as I can tell. Certainly there is no RDRAM on their product list now:

Winbond's letters to the shareholders for 1999 and 2000 mention no RDRAM:

The industry word is that Winbond is setting up to make DDR, not RDRAM:

This is verified by Winbond's own website, with news released from last week: (LOL!!!)

WINBOND INTRODUCES NEW DOUBLE DATA-RATE 256 MBIT DRAM CHIPS
Winbond Press Release, May 23, 2001
DDR Technology Offers Transfer Data Rate Twice As Fast As Ordinary DRAMS
Winbond Electronics Corporation a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions worldwide today announced the availability of a series of new double data-rate (DDR) 256 Mb SDRAM chips. Winbond's new chips, the W942504AH-7, W942508AH-7 and W942516AH-7, all feature an innovative new double data-rate architecture, aimed at vastly improving the performance of computers, desktops and servers. The chip is currently sampling with volume shipments slated for the third quarter of 2001.

Winbond's new DDR chips are ideal for module, chipset, desktop and server OEMs with high performance requirements for their products. The new line of chips feature 16M x 4 Banks x 4 Bit, 8M x 4 Banks x 8 Bit and 4M x 4 Banks x 16 Bit solutions that enable two data transfers per clock cycle. This pipelined, multi-bank architecture allows for concurrent operation providing customers with twice the bandwidth and literally doubling the transfer rate of data. The 256M chips also feature 2.5-volt power supply, up to 143 MHz clock rate frequency, and 66 pin TSOP packaging.

No RDRAM news:

I'd say that if you're hoping that Winbond is going to make RDRAM any time soon, you're mighty hopeful. They've put out no press releases about it, who knows where that news article came from. And where's the Rambus PR trumpeting the new production source? Or do you suppose that Rambus is tired of constantly announcing that companies are going to go into production on RDRAM, only to not have any produced? Maybe they're worried about shareholder lawsuits, so they're toning down their crap. But be careful with those bags now, if you want them to work right you have to get an airtight seal!
