The Mime's Last Day
~Scott Poole

An old couple follows him now;
they wait in the park, and then they start.
"That’s no box," the old man says,
"that’s a wet bag.
Why don’t you put your head in it?"

The old woman with her manicured drawl
thinks the mime needs reassurance;
"It’s not that we think you pull a bad
invisible rope, it’s just that
you’re pulling something, well . . . let’s say
kind of perverted . . . if you’re going to pull it
like that, I mean, what will people . . ."

But the mime has prepared
the black hole rocket maneuver
an original in the silent histories of mime.
He crushes himself to launch position:
a black disk on the pavement.
The couple doesn’t know what to say.
He really does look like an empty hole.
Investigating, the old man steps too close and plunges in.
The old woman grabs for his arm and is sucked in after.
A yelp spreads pigeons across the world;
the mime leaps up screaming and never really stops.
