The first suicide "bomber" probably was the biblical Samson. He sacrificed himself to kill a large number of Philistines -- seen by many as the ancestors of present day Palestinians. A certain irony here.

I do not believe the Jews can unilaterally stop it. >>>

Sure they can..but that would require Milosevic style operation (unacceptable and unpalatable to the rest of the world) The real battle is for International public opinion that is all..Piece can't be achieved. Arafat has no more control over events in Palestine than Thaci in Kosovo...Israel has no reason to give-up anything, land, part of Jerusalem or freeze settlements, because piece at the end is not achievable...Radical groups can't be controlled by any measures....The only point of any negotiations is the battle for public opinion....So another war looms, as soon as public and World opinion is ready a massive operation on the West Bank will start and will be an extraordinary effective (for some time naturally, untill public opinion will swing the other way...

<<It is not cruelty, it's sacrifice. It may not be 100%
justified.>>
On what grounds is killing 18 innocent civilians justified?
You think it's not a cruel act?????

Nuff said.

The Hard Line
or
The Fundamentalists

It doesn't matter wether they are the IRA, the FLQ or Hamas, anyone who thinks that they can solve matters with the use of force better be prepared to face the average, sit at home, beverage drinking, house keeping Joe, and he has access to the most potent weapon.
Joe has muscled up in the last thirty years and continues to get stronger. Joe's vast resources are mostly underutilized but Joe will continue to flex his muscle in world affairs. Keeping Joe happy has been the aim of some of the most powerful people on the planet. One way to get Joe's attention is to blow up discos because you think you are right about something. In a nutshell Mr. Charters, yes, hoodlums and criminals is what I would label those responsible, right up to the highest authority supporting such insanity.
Will it be left up to the Hatfields and McCoys to settle their feud, many may think so, but I know it will eventually be Joe that is heard, because Joe can speak the loudest and has the biggest stick.

The average man, through sheer weight of numbers needing satisfaction, will eventually conquer everything, this is his biggest stick. Every struggle is based on obtaining satisfaction for Joe. It is only a question of time. The moderates, those who seek prosperity in peace, will continue to grow in every clime. Eventually they win every fight, not because they embrace death, but because they embrace life and this is the most potent weapon, life is a constant struggle. There is no end ... there is only the going, the beverage drinking, the house keeping.
