The Houston area is also very humid, and I have seen such connections fail there. Here, in the Tampa area, it is also very humid but, I haven't been here long enough to hear of any failures. I'd be willing to bet that they have happened though.

My house in Huntington Beach,built in '68 has aluminum wiring. When we moved in in '81 I had several circuits arc on me so I inspected all outlets and switches and changed out the ones that were the least suspect, as well as tightening all the connections. I keep a supply of co/alr outlets and switches as they're getting more and more difficult to find. Not much problem since.
