Swing traders might get bored in the next few months. I agree with those forecasting a general market tight trading range for the near future. The market is being held up by the Fed's aggressive rate cuts while we wait for earnings to kick in.

Buying stocks of companies with growing earnings has come back into style. Along with earning's growth, other good ideas include:

* Sell out of the money covered calls. The calls protect your core investment from short term downside to the extent of their cost. Lower market volatility makes it a safer bet that out of the market calls will remain out of the money.

* Buy stocks that are in consolidating sectors. Examples include natural gas (recent ex. GOU) where the larger players are finding the smaller players are a cheaper means to increase inventory, cash rich/beaten up internets (recent ex. COOL) and biotech/drug stocks where the big guys have found the little guys to be the most cost effective method to replenish their respective product lines.
