The alliance, which includes major domestic mobile phone producers, would promote "technology research and development, supply chains and distribution networks", the newspaper said. Domestic firms controlled less than 10 per cent of the market, which was dominated by foreign giants including Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola, it said. "To compete with international companies, individual Chinese firms can hardly win," it quoted Gui Shiyong, chairman of the China Mobile Communications Association, a sponsor of the alliance. "Getting domestic companies together could sharpen the competitive edge of the industry as a whole," he said. Domestic firms are expected to increase their share of a market that has annual growth exceeding 10 per cent, the newspaper quoted Shi Jixing, chairman of the Eastern Communications, as saying. Mobile phone users in China were expected to exceed 350 million within five years with annual handset demand surpassing 150 million, the newspaper said. China had 105.19 million mobile phone subscribers by April, the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has said. Mobile phone user growth has rocketed in China, prompting top mobile phone maker Ericsson to predict China will usurp the US this year as its biggest market. << - Eric -
