Remembering the kind of good-natured booing that went on when I was in school, that surprised me greatly.

I've never engaged in booing in my life. Just can't do it. When I was a girl, I was taught that it was uncouth. I recall that some people did it, but it was not prominent. I don't recall what booing went on as good natured although it was never vicious.

When I was in school, you differentiated your team from the other team by clapping tepidly but politely for the other team, for example, during the player introductions, and cheering loudly for your own. My father was careful to warn me off of any impolite display, good natured or not. I doubt he foresaw a slippery slope. He's just a nice guy.
