Market Outlook
When Greenspan Talks, People Listen
By:Adam Martin
Stocks had a healthy open this morning with the major indexes glowing a healthy green, but shortly dipped into negative territory in light trading. Over the weekend, Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan said although he and his team are keeping a close eye on the economy should things change, but at the moment he's not worried about inflation. That may ease convince traders that another rate reduction is sure to take place in June, and on a day with little else to go on, that bit of news might be enough to nudge the market to the green side. Last month we saw a great deal of new stock flooding the market, but not much new money coming into play, so liquidity is down. In spite of that, there's buying in several sectors including tech and energy.

11:49AM Cypress Semi (CY) 21.99 +0.39: At this point, there are at least two things that shouldn't surprise investors. First, it shouldn't be a surprise to hear that a semiconductor company is warning of an earnings shortfall, and secondly, it shouldn't be a surprise to see the stock of the offending company trade higher on the heels of a warning announcement. That is the fortunate fate of Cypress Semiconductor today as the market continues to discount the likelihood that business can only get better given how bad it is now. Need some added insight into how bad business is? Consider these comments from CY: its WAN and SAN segments, which account for roughly 50% of revenue, are "practically dead" in the current quarter, suffering from both slow end demand and high inventory; its Wireless Infrastructure and Wireless Terminal segments, roughly 30% of revenue, aren't likely to resume growth until Q4 as inventory levels remain high; and its Computation segment, which comprises approximately 20% of revenue, has stalled. CY did note that it believes the Computation segment is still likely to strengthen in 2H01. In the meantime, though, CY is warning that Q2 revenues will be in the $175-$185 mln range and that earnings before goodwill will be in the breakeven to $0.02 per share range (consensus is $0.03). The company's prior revenue expectation, which was set after a Q1 warning in April, was $200-$210 mln. For reference purposes, it will behoove you to know that CSCO, LU, ALA, IBM, INTC, NT, COMS, ARW and MOT are among CY's customers. In FY00, the latter two companies accounted for 18% and 10.9% of total sales, respectively. As for CY's competition, it includes the likes of ALTR, AMCC, IDTI, NSM, TXN, VTSS, PMCS and XLNX. Frankly, none of the aforementioned stocks are reacting too negatively to CY's warning; many, in fact, are trading higher. That type of reaction is often deemed to be a good sign by the market as it would suggest the worst is over for these companies. Briefing.com would agree that is true, but we would hasten to add that there has been no convincing evidence from CY, or others, that business activity will be picking up in material fashion anytime soon. Hence, we remain cautious on committing new money to the semiconductor stocks at this time.-- Patrick J. O'Hare, Briefing.com
