No kidding !!

Jim McPanic has suddenly come to the conclusion that NOBODY needs an 8-way server system - now that AMD has a limping-along-with-no-server-OEMSs- 2-way SMP chip set !

Ten - re: "By the way, did you notice the 14U "rack-optimized" form factor of Compaq's 8-way server? Geez, I'd hate to be the guy who has to lift that monster up and slide it into the rack!"

I would imagine the power supplies on that sucker are rather hefty - along with all the other redundant hardware..

If it is anything like the existing 8500, which is a 7U, the design is completely tool-free modular and everything is accessible in the rack. So the installer simply unplugs everything and puts the chassis in the rack - the chassis empty is pretty light and easy to manage. Then slide and click in the rest of the gear - processors, I/O rack, power supplies. None of those individual components is very heavy and installation is literally a snap - the installation lock also levers the module in the last little bit to assure correct contact and alignment.
