My take on the AMAT commercial is that it is an attempt to gain broader recognition by the public at large, in particular the investing public, as to what AMAT does. Time was, back in the 80s and early 90s, companies like TXN (and AMAT) would NOT do ANY TV advertising. TXN wanted to focus their ad dollars on the engineers who designed new equipment that used the chip company's products (and AMAT wanted to influence the engineers who made equipment selection for new fabs and for fab upgrades). The tide has been changing, so once reticent tech firms are now attempting to make the general public more aware of what they do.

Many of these ads seem lame, particularly to the tech savvy. Even to the unwashed masses, the ads are lame. The message is a difficult one to convey.

It seems a poorly conceived advertisement. More to the point, it makes you wonder about AMAT

Actually, it makes me wonder about the people who wonder about AMAT because of the commercials they run. Can ANYONE name me 1, that is ONE, company with 10B in sales with no advertising or commercials? There are more worthwhile things to discuss than the merits of an ad campaign for a multi-billion dollar company. AMAT should be a 20B within a few years; 30M out of 20B is .15%, not a large ad budget IMHO.

If nothing else, the ads may give AMAT more visibility and the ability to attract engineers who may not have otherwise heard of them(and have gone to work to a competitor). Because one of these days the labor pool is going to get tight again, believe it or not.

>>> Anyone see the AMAT commercial? .......
Maybe it's a desperation move by people who have run out of other ideas on how to get more business.

It's called stock support. Maybe they want to start bailing.

I can't believe it would have much more than zero affect on sales.
