lll, my philosophy is that i want people to work for *me*, not some corporation. employees observe behavior daily and decide whether someone is legit based off their observations. you can't fool 'em. i often run into conflict between the corporate line infringing on what i feel is dishonest.

i *know* i have no control over layoffs and i don't *promise* a given layoff is the *last* one and so people shouldn't *worry* (even if the company wants me to). i tell people that the market will decide whether we will be working. in the mean time, develop your skills and make yourselves employable - at both the current company and a potential future company. skills are ones only true job security, not a company.

if someone leaves my group for a better opportunity i'm happy for them. i've seen many supervisors hold back great employees for selfish gain. that, imho, is mean spirited. i've probably written 40 resumes for my employees in order to help them get better positions within the company.

anyway, it works. it is easy. it leads to happiness and satisfaction with work. it is also extremely rare and most executive types don't understand it or value it. however, they will see the results and enjoy them.
