Putin Tells Gadhafi He's Interested in Reviving Ties

MOSCOW, June 4 (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a letter to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi emphasizing Moscow's interest in reviving ties with the Arab nation and helping to settling conflicts in the Middle East, the Kremlin said Monday.

The letter was delivered by former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, who visited Libya Sunday as part of a four-nation Mideast tour. Primakov is an Arab affairs expert and leader of the moderate Fatherland-All Russia faction in Russia's lower house of parliament.

Putin's message "emphasizes Russia's striving for the utmost development of cooperation with the Libyan republic in various spheres, and lays out Russian solutions to the current questions in the Middle East," the Kremlin press service said in a statement. It gave no details.

Putin has sought to boost Moscow's global influence and counter U.S. dominance of international affairs, in the process reviving Soviet-era ties with nations shunned by the West, including Libya, North Korea and Iraq.
