Japanese computer and electronics makers NEC and Fujitsu said Monday they will boost their PC server output in anticipation of greater demand.

The plan reflects healthy demand in Japan's information technology sector despite a general weakness in corporate spending on new equipment.

NEC said it is targeting an increase in shipments for personal computer servers by 22 percent for the year to March 2002, and Fujitsu said it will raise its shipments for the powerful computers by 30 percent.

Total PC server shipments for the current business year would total 65,000 for Fujitsu and 99,000 for NEC.

NEC also plans to challenge the dominance of Unix-based computer sales to the science and technology sector by introducing a new computer capable of operating up to 16 micro-processing units (MPU) simultaneously. The product will go on sale June 30.

NEC, Japan's second-largest chipmaker, and Fujitsu, one of Japan's biggest computer and computer-equipment makers, said a month ago that their profits would recover this year because their chip business would pick up in the second half of this business year.
