Close The major averages closed higher following a session marked by light volume. In fact, the Nasdaq logged its lightest volume day of the year in trade activity that was lacking conviction. Positive comments from Alan Greenspan contributed to the mildly positive bias. Speaking at a conference in Singapore, Mr. Greenspan indicated that inflation is not a threat to the U.S. economy. While not explicitly stated, the Chairman's comments have been taken to suggest the Fed remains open to additional interest rate cuts.
