Grains, Soybeans Strong at Open

Grains, Soybeans Are Higher in Early Trading on Chicago Board of Trade

CHICAGO (AP) -- Grain and soybean futures prices were higher in early trading Tuesday on the Chicago Board of Trade.

Soybean and corn prices soared at the open on a significant drop in crop condition ratings and a forecast for more bad weather in U.S. growing regions. While there had been predictions of a warming trend by the weekend,
several more days of cool, wet weather are now expected.

Crop conditions in corn have deteriorated for two consecutive weeks. Wheat was slightly higher on spillover strength from beans and corn, and in a correction from Monday's sharp decline. Harvest progress in southern Oklahoma was expected to limit gains. Wheat for July delivery rose 1/4 cent to $2.63 3/4 a bushel; July corn rose 2 cents to $1.97 3/4 a bushel; July oats rose 1/2 cent to $1.13 1/4 a bushel; July soybeans rose 4 1/2 cents to $4.57 1/2 a bushel. Beef futures declined while pork futures were mixed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. August live cattle fell .18 cent to 73.92 cents a pound; August feeder cattle fell .22 cent to 91.45 cents a pound; July lean hogs fell .12 cent to 67.20 cents a pound; July pork bellies rose .43 cent to 79.60 cents a pound.
