I am perfectly happy to have an purely ethical exemption from combat duty. As I said, it was my impression there was one allowed, but I was young, and may be mistaken. Since there is no draft, though, it is not a pressing issue, and the sense of grievance is not likely to hang on it. I cannot fathom why there is such a sense of grievance, in fact........

Conscientious objector status is extremely difficult for anyone declaring a non religious belief system. This reflects the ignorant bias of government toward non religious people. What may be fairly routine for a religious person with a subjective moral code copied from an ancient tribe, will be strewn with impediments for an objective agnostic speaking from his/her heart. How sad that people are so irrational.
