It's probably in AMD's best interests to get HT a standard in future PC's, and then deny Intel a free license, but not everyone else.

That would just about guarantee a competing Intel technology, and a lot of money and arm twisting behind it. I think it would be to the best interest of AMD if Intel jumped on HT. This way, both Intel and AMD would be on the same infrastructure, so the market would grow, and hopefully, AMD would never again be at disadvantage vs. Intel regarding infrastructure, chipsets, connecting technologies to faster buses (PCI-X, infiniband etc).
