they can work at starbucks. then they will get a discount on $3 coffee instead of shares. i still think the coffee is worth more.

Yes, very true. But remember, spurned employees have longer memories than happy employees. So when the tables turn again, and they undoubtedly will, do you think these same employees won't remember that they got screwed and then go elsewhere? Maybe not. Maybe I'm assuming too much initiative on the masses part. The truth is that I might not leave if I was similarly offended, simply due to inertia and happiness in my job. However, I am simply wondering for the thread's debate whether this might have an affect on attrition long term, as people start to believe the future of Cisco's stock price doesn't look so bright, despite the fundamentals of the company remaining strong for the long term. Something to think about.
